we drove out in the rain to portobelo panama, once one of the main Spanish colonial ports, where they would bring stuff up by land from Panama City and ship to Spain from the colonies like Chile and Peru on the west coast of South America. Portobelo is a beautiful town, a bit in ruins today. We had heard that it was possible to hire private boats to take you to Columbia, since Portobelo is a popular place for scuba diving and for sailboat charters, we wanted to give it a try. We had heard that the captains hung out at a restaurant called Yates but we couldnt find it and couldnt find anything promising there so we headed further up the road to Porto Lindo.
As we pulled into Porto Lindo, a 4X4 pulled up and stopped in front of us telling us the hostel was the other way - the driver said he knew we were looking for a boat to Columbia and that he was waiting for us. OK. How did he know that? Turns out mistook us for other bikers that had called him earlier in the week and hadnt shown up yet -but we were glad to find someone who could help.
