Went out to dinner this evening with a few people from school. We went to a restaurant that one of the girls loves. It has a 5 soles fixed menu every day. Went in and sat down. There were 2 other people inside eating.
A waitress came over and gave us a menu (And by `a` I do mean one menu...there were 7 of us). We looked over the menu for a while. She came by and we asked what the plate of the day was for the 5 soles menu. She left and we were chatting, not really paying attention too much to the time. However, after about 25 minutes of waiting we began wondering if we had to get up to order. A few more minutes passed and finally she came over. We started to order and she looked at us and said, `Pero, la cocinera no esta aqui.` īBut, the cook is not here.ī You would have thought she could have told us that a half an hour before, like when we first went in, or when she handed us the menu. Or, when she told us the special of the day. But, I guess I am in Peru!
My day started out with an hour and a half at the Peru Rail Office, trying to buy tickets to Machu Picchu. That was quite an adventure. I have tried to do this online but on their website it says there are NO trains going from Machu Picchu to Cusco for any date in 2008. My friend and I thought this was weird so we asked at a travel agent. They did not have tickets available for the dates we wanted but said that if we went to the Peru Rail Office directly, we would have more of a chance of getting them. However, the lady at the Office apparently can only see 5 days in advance to check for availability. However, from today until 5 days till now, all trains are sold out. So she said to come back tomorrow to check for 5 days from then. I asked what the possibility is that that would be sold out tomorrow when we arrived and she said that there was no way she could possibly find that out for us because she canīt see that far (that far being FIVE DAYS) in advance. Since I do know people who have booked in advance, I asked how that could possibly have done that, seeing as their website doesnīt work and at the ticketing office, then can only book 5 days in advance. She seemed unsure of how it could have happened as well. Again, I guess this is just Peru!
No worries though. I was able to book tickets and should be going next week. Just have to stay an extra night out there because we were unable to get a train back on the day we wanted!
Off to Taray for the week. My school has another location there. It is in the Sacred Valley. I hear it is very nice (and ALWAYS has hot water...hope I didnīt just jinx myself!) Not sure if I will have access to internet there so donīt worry if you donīt hear from me. Iīm probably just enjoying the hot showers!
