After some flight delays due to poor weather in London, we made our way through to Berlin. The city is not what we expected, as it is difficult to distinguish between the eastern and western sides - strangely, the majority of the pedestrian areas and the landmarks were on the eastern side of the city. Checkpoint Charlie, the gates, and the plazas were highlights, as was a quick stop at the remnants of the Berlin Wall, where the kids scribbled their names and a drawing! For lunch, it was time to try German food (but Grey and Jack went for Subway and brought their food into the German restaurant at which the rest of us were eating) - the food was quite good and not that expensive since we weren't right near the tourist areas. This was pretty much the first Jersey boys (as we became known) meal - we sat in this restaurant for a good hour just laughing and sampling most of the food we could find.
We strolled through side streets, checked out little markets, museums, and shops, visited the Jewish Museum (some very interesting exhibits), and then went out for dinner. The boys were able to get on the correct public transportation so that we saw some more of the city and enjoyed the nightlife of Berlin. Converting to the Euro was easy and somewhat disappointing - the dollar is not much right now. We didn't make it to the Zoo, and discovered unhappily that there was no football game anywhere during our travels, but the boys got to eat a lot of food from stands along the streets - the meat literally fell off the bones of whatever animal it was that was being served. The disappointed travelers never made it to the techno-rave clubs about which they had apparently been dreaming, and the Berlin nightlife that they experienced was watching some folks shoot darts while we sat at a table...but we think that Quinn found his future wife - a developing story that we'll follow throughout the journey.
