15th March 2003:
Thailand being a Buddhist country does not use the same calendar as us, and in fact, the Buddah era was supposed to begin 543 BC, and so the current year in Thailand is 2546. Beat that Buck Rogers! The reason I'm telling you this is not to widen your knowledge of other cultures, but for the simple reason that I didn't do anything for the next couple days other than watch films, eat food, and sleep!
I visited the bakery in town, which is very good, and open 24 hours a day, for all your baking requirements, whatever time of day.
What turned out to be a very dull day, though made for an interesting night! I went into town to watch the Villa-Man U match, which was nothing special, but there were only 2 bars showing it. The first was rammed so I got a decent seat in the second. After about 1/2 an hour, this bloke asked if he could sit next to me. Of course, I didn't mind. Though at this point, one of the staff asked me if I could move somewhere else to leave this gentleman on his own! The bloke interrupted and told the staff member that I was fine, and to get lost. Anyhow, after the obligatory questions - 'where you from', 'how long you in Thailand', bla bla bla, this fellow proceeded to tell me his life story. I don't know why it is that people tend to do this, but it is not the first time. When working as a Driver's mate, after about 10 minutes of being with the driver, he had told me there was something wrong with his sperm level, and that him and his wife had spent five grand on IVF treatment which brought their first son etc etc.
Anyhow, back to the story. It turns out that this bloke is a dealer, and not just small fry, he's in with the big boys. He had lived in Thailand for the last 3 years, and had a Thai wife, who was currently serving a 5 year sentence for money laundering though he hoped she would be out in 6 months. He was hoping to make 100,000 Baht over the full moon, which is about 1,500 quid for 4 days work. Not bad at all. I asked him if he had any jobs going, and sure enough, for 100 pounds, all I had to do was deliver this package to............... no, only joking Mum. Don't panic. Though this guy really was interesting. He told me about procurement trips to India, acquiring the strongest smokeable substance known to man. He pointed out different people who were part of the underworld. It made for a thoroughly entertaining evening, and although he was obviously a dealer, he didn't off me any gear once. Normally I wouldn't believe this, but everybody seemed to know him, he knew his stuff, and he didn't have to pay for his food or drink!
I also bumped into the Leeds girls from Khao Sok this evening!

16th March 2003:
Today, if possible, I did even less than yesterday. After collecting my laundry, I caught up on a bit of sun-bathing, now I am on to my new layer of skin.
Took an early dinner to watch 'Catch Me if you can' which was excellent. I also found out tonight, that Steve and the others are still on Ko Samui, and will be venturing over tomorrow night for the Full Moon! Watched the dreadful Man City-Birmingham match, then returned to my hut. Sorry, nothing else to report. After all, Sunday is the day of rest.

17th March 2003:
Full Moon Party Day! Safe in the knowledge that I did not have to meet the others until 10:30 pm this evening, I took lunch in town, and watched 'The Beach'. After a short walk, I came back and did a bit of reading. This evening I completed my Leonardo DiCaprio season, by watching Gangs of New York, my 3rd Leo film in 2 days, but I didn't rate this one at all.
After picking up a small bottle of Sam Song Thai whiskey and some coke, I went back to the bungalow, and got ready. I met Steve in the 'Drop In' at half 10 as planned, where he took me to meet the others - Liz, Laurie, Leah, and Kelly. We had a few beers, and then moved on to the party on the beach, which was really getting underway now. I didn't know really what to expect from a full moon party, other than a full moon, and a party atmosphere, but it was excellent. Everyone is really hyped up, and there's a real festival atmosphere about the place.
At midnight it was Steves 22nd birthday, and so in celebration of this fact, we acquired a bottle of champers, and wandered out to a boat, about 20m away, and celebrated in style. However it was short lived. Unfortunately my boat dismount was somewhat less than gracious, and on resurfacing, if I had any doubt before, it was now confirmed that my camera was not water-proof. I can hear my Dad now in the style of Captain Manwerring saying 'Stupid Boy'! So once again, I had managed to submerge my passport, along with my airline tickets and everything else proving that alcohol and swimming do not mix. I was determined, however not to let this spoil my 1st ever full moon party, and so in a drunken stooper, I danced the night away. I remember touching a snake, and kissing a chameleon, but everything else is quite blurred. I will not forget this full moon party in a hurry, and thoroughly enjoyed myself!
I found out the day after that apparently, there were a lot of CIA agents here, as apparently there had been a tip off that this full moon party was going to be bombed by some kind of terrorist network. I would probably have slept through it anyway...........

18th March 2003:
I woke up on a beach about sunrise, and slightly disorientated I managed to make it home to my little bungalow. I woke up properly about 10, fully dressed, and led next to a pile of vomit. I looked around for somebody to blame, before realising that it must have been me. I managed to get changed, then used the internet to find out where Steve and co were staying in Ko Samui. On checking out, for the first time since travelling the owner wanted to check my room before I left. I sat in his office anxious, and panicky half expecting him to come back and fine me or make me clean up, or both. Though to my surprise and relief, he came back all smiles, and wished me luck on the rest of my travels.
I got my ticket down at the boat jetty, then had something to eat, in a weak attempt at an apology to my abused stomach. Whilst waiting I met this Aussie bloke who had also been over for full moon. He was about 30, and ate a Callypo lolly with a 'Mick Dundee' style knife. Now its not easy to look tough eating a Callypo, but this bloke, with a knife somehow pulled it off. He told me that he got drugged at the 'Drop In' and was ill for the whole night, and he had spoken to others that had the same thing happen to them. Maybe it wasn't the bottle of whiskey I consumed? Maybe I got drugged... in fact yes, definitely I got drugged which led to my lack of co-ordination, verbal skills, and balance!
On boarding the boat over to Ko Samui, a couple of Thai girls were screaming. At first it seemed a bit odd, then we realised some bloke on the top deck was puking which managed to get all over this poor girls hair, bag and clothes. Much to the amusement of myself and 3 other English lads, who on realising what happened burst out laughing!
I got a taxi into Chaweng, and found their resort, though it was a bit pricey, so I opted for the cheaperm and slightly more modest 'Lucky Mother' resort, which seemed apt, for some reason. I met the peeps about 6, and we went to a pricey restaurant of Steves choosing which turned out to be the worst meal I've had since travelling!
After food, we went to the local stadium to watch some Muay Thai boxing, which was not cheap at 500 Baht a head, but I really enjoyed it and would definitely go again.
It being Steves birthday, we were not quite ready to go to bed at midnight, and so in true birthday style, we took Steve to a strip joint, looking to get Steve laid, but it turned out to be an extortionate 2,500 Baht (about 40 quid) for half an hour dance, and we don't even know that he got any extras with that! We declined, visited another strip bar, then I had a cheese sandwich mmmmmmmm, and returned to my Lucky Mother! Great night, and I'm sure Steve enjoyed his birthday bash!
