We've spent the day travelling South from Tongariro to Wellington as we're hoping/intending to book a ferry for Wednesday morning. The Lonely Planet has suggested that a backpackers bunkhouse called Rosemere is the only place that it's possible to camp within the confines of the city so Neil phoned ahead and booked the only two pitches. En route however, he began to feel a little "crook" and we decided that it would be sensible to see if we could upgrade to proper beds for the night. On arrival at this hostel which was literally minutes from the city centre, we noted that the lawn on which the pitches were available was slightly smaller than a "first class large" stamp. We were thankful that they had a twin room available as there was little chance that we would get both of our tents pitched and would therefore most likely both have had an appalling nights sleep. As it was, we took advantage of having power and got all the appliances charged up.

We had identified the need for an excursion to the retail outlets of town so we decided to "hit the high street"! Jane, you'd have been proud of us - or maybe not. We needed, between us, four items to top up our supplies prior to heading South. We went into a total of four shops, procured three of the items, decided against the fourth and headed home. Job done - an hour max. Result - two happy chaps...

In the evening we had a stroll to find a bite to eat. Wellington really is a quite lovely city comprising high rise office blocks, small housing stock and other commercial buildings and some nice quirky architecture, all nestling in amongst green hillsides and tucked into an enormous natural harbour. Sadly, the camera stayed in my pocket and I took no photos, thinking I would catch some nice shots on the ferry out to Picton.

The ferry was booked for 8.25am the following morning which meant that we would miss the free breakfast at the hostel but we were up and away and boarded the ship at 8.00am in good time. The ferry left spot on time at 8.25am but my photoshoot was thwarted by miserable weather. I took some shots as we left the harbour but they make Wellington look really grotty - which it's not! So I'm not sharing them...

And that was it, North Island done - for the time being. 850 kilometres in four days and, by my reckoning, almost as far trekked/walked.

Glad you are keeping in practice for retail therapy - I wouldn't like you to get out of the habit! Hope Neil feeling better
