So Auckland arrived - just about spot on time after 23 hours flying. Thanks Thai Airways - and thanks for the service as well. I am happy to recommend them. (and yes, they do serve alcohol..). I waited, in hope rather than expectation, next to the luggage carousel, and heard my name called over the tannoy. Another first in my life so soon after the previous one, stepping foot in New Zealand. The guy who explained that my bag hadn't made it was really pleasant and went through the procedure of what would happen and confirmed that it would (should?) be in on the same flight the following day
I should have known, I suppose, that with Neil there would be no gentle introduction, no offer of sleep to overcome any jetlag. And so it was, off to the beach for a picnic. So the first "engagement" on arrival was a splendid picnic sitting on the sand at Piha beach watching the rollers pile in. I resisted the offer of a swim - after all, I had no swimmers in my hand luggage (nor any other clothes as it happens so I did feel overdressed in smart (ish) trousers and a "UK weather" polo shirt). Instead, we took a walk up to a nearby waterfall. You'll know it Helen, the one where you swam in the pool at the bottom - Sorry, haven't got a name for it - Neil's having a little kip. Considering I had been working on turning to lard over Christmas, this was quite enough exercise for one day. Not only did we walk up the river to the base of the waterfall, we also decided to head to the top. Now a 30 metre waterfall doesn't seem too much but my legs they were most definitely shaking when we'd done.
So that, I thought would be that for the day. Err no. As the itinerary said that we had to leave Auckland the following day, I had to have sight of the city from on high
So that was it really. A quick shower and then off to the pub for a couple of pints and a burger - if only to stop me falling asleep too early and being awake half the night. It worked. Had a great night's sleep ready to start the serious business the following morning.
