The books say that Cherai is the "lost jewel" of the area so the adventure began! A walk into town to catch the ferry (2 rupees each - single) across to Vipeen Island. Done! But with one minor (?) hitch. We piled onto the boat and as it left Kochi, Jane suddenly realised that she was the only woman in the "front" section and that the "back" section was entirely populated by women. An uncomfortable five minutes for Jane, I think. The book says catch a bus the 25km to Cherai. Sadly, the bus services on Vipeen island don't do English translations so we had a plan. Walk around looking lost until someone realises we're stupid lost Westerners who could only possibly have come to Vipeen to go to the beach. 30 seconds it took and we were on the bus
We didn't fancy the 2km walk back to the bus stop with a possible one hour wait for a bus so we splashed out on a tuk tuk. Great fun again - but definitely not for those of a nervous disposition.
We didn't make the same basic error on the return ferry trip and duly separated for the trip across the water...
