Jane's "must-do" when compiling our tour itinerary was the Ile de Re.  So we embarked on a six hour transit from the Midi Pyrenees to this very French holiday resort.

The bridge onto the island, which is just across from La Rochelle, is a toll bridge - 18.6 Euros - and, it has to be said, is quite impressive.

Having got onto the island, we had no preconceptions about where to stay so we plucked a campsite out of the book and headed for it.  It was a good choice, peaceful, sheltered from the wind, well placed for the beach - and with no annoying arc lamps.  We booked in for two nights so we could have a full day to see what the place was all about.  In honesty, I'm pretty sure that we missed the best of it  and would have needed maybe a couple of weeks and a couple of bikes to explore properly.

Impressions from 24 hours there are that it's a holiday resort.  Very flat, lots of beaches and absolutely millions of cyclists, most of whom - from what we saw - hadn't been on a bike in a lot of years!  Talk about being a liability on the roads....

The only other real things we discovered about the island are:

1. Property is incredibly expensive.  A million Euros plus for a "second home" type place.
2. If you want to spent maybe 50 Euros on a nice "Plat du Jour" lunch, you really need to do it before about 2.15pm as after that, all the restaurants just stop serving.  We very nearly went very hungry but in the end we ate alone on the terrace of a nice restaurant feasting on horse and a very nice steak....

And a general discovery about France - previously rumoured by folks we had spoken to in Spain.  Men are not allowed in swimming pools in shorts due to "hygiene reasons".  They have to wear Speedo's....

So no swim for me then.  My days of budgie smugglers are long since over....

Thank God, I hear you all say...
