Do you know, Port Wine doesn't come from Porto but from across the Douro in Gaia. That's ever since the Porto authorities bumped up the taxes and the producers all moved across the river. And the bonus is that if you do a "Port Wine" tour and then sit on the waterfront with a small taster, you have the most glorious views across the river to the old town of Porto itself. Stunning!
And for the engineers out there, to get from one place to the other, you go via a bridge designed by a certain M. Eiffel....
We had a day and a half in Porto. The first half day, it was p***ing down so we did the Graham's Port Tour with our guide, Jane's cousin Tim
We woke up the following day to sunshine so after taking the train into town, we did the Open Top Bus Tour of Historic Porto. Two hours well spent that deposited us on the promenade in Gaia where we ate a fine lunch whilst overlooking historic Porto on the Douro.
The mandatory cathedral visit - which, I have to say, was enhanced enormously when the organist with the biggest pipes you can imagine burst into a rendition of Toccata which almost shook the building - followed before a Magnum and the train back to Tim and Julie's.
