HIGH FORCE AND BEYOND
Sunday/Monday and into Tuesday
Not much to report today. Drove from Gordale to Middleton-in-Tees, having abandoned plans to stop over in Swaledale. Another day ahead of schedule!
I drove from Hardraw to Swaledale over Buttertubs Pass – another fabulous driving road
Am in Middleton to visit High Force tomorrow. Had picked this campsite as being best placed for High Force but am a bit unsure about what I might have done....
The site is on the edge of town accessed down what seems to be an allotment/industrial/gypsy campsite type road. The site itself is at the very end bordered by the River Tees meandering round it. BUT....
Of the four other vans on the site, two are empty and two appear to be occupied by what look like travellers. If I have wheels in the morning, I'll be out of here early.
And more, on the access road to the site, someone has built a small cemetery – yes a cemetery – in a field right next to the access track. I think it’s probably for a dog but I’m not 100% sure it’s not for a person. I’d post a photo of it but there’s no way I’m stopping to take one! But if I do stop, I fear that the scrapyard opposite the personal cemetery might drag the bus in and offer me a tenner for it
A Town Planner might call it a “mixed development” road.... Then there was the sound of the “Dukes of Hazzard” car horn from along the road earlier this afternoon.
Rest assured I won’t be posting this on the web until I am well clear of Middleton-in-Teesdale. (and the site owner has asked me to post a reference on his website – what can I say?!?!)
Noticed when I arrived here that the higher passenger side rear view mirror was giving me a fine view of, well, myself the driver! On inspection, it became apparent that the series of impacts with shrubs, bushes etc had caused a partial failure of the metal (rust) and that it was now hanging by a thread! I have straightened it (bent the metal back) – on more than one occasion as I continue to hit small branches – and now have a perfect view of the hedgerow?!?! Note to self: search Ebay for wing mirror when I get home.
So, I went to High Force – and Low Force
That done, I checked I’d got four wheels and high tailed it out of town. I hate to keep going on about fabulous driving roads but there’s another one – the B6278 from Stanhope to Derwent Water across Wearside – stunning!!
And that was probably as good as the day got. After that I joined the A69 and A1 and saw more cars in an hour than I’ve seen in the last week. Awful...
