Andy and I, compelled to spend a day at the beach, decided on a whim to take a boat to Batam, an Indonesian island conveniently accessible by ferry from both Singapore and Johor Bahru. Batam caters mostly to Singaporean holiday-goers, weekenders, and day-trippers, (and, as we later learned, hooker-hunters). It is a small, drab, unimpressive place destined to become little more than a resort-speckled island (we saw more construction equipment than people). We suspected Batam to be a 'dud' of a decision. So, to make the most of our afternoon, we went to the aptly named 'Batam View' for a little fun in the sun. The beach was lousy and low-tide prevented us from being able to kayak, so we used their swimming pool for a while before heading back to the ferry. At least it was a relaxing, sunny day.
