When I got the call from  Smruti at Lion World Tours this morning my heart dropped. Suddenly flashbacks of bankrupt travel agencies rushed through my head. We are less than a month out from our trip and we have been walking on eggshells hoping that nothing happens to bring an end to this trip!

There has been a lot that has gone on since we booked the trip back in February. A lot can happen in 8 months. On my Birthday I got our anti-malaria medication. Not quite the way we intended. We were working at Disney's Animal Kingdom when my stomach started to hurt. I thought I had eaten way to many of the blueberry turnovers my co-worker made for my Birthday. The pain got worse and when we got home I started to throw up. I continued to throw up for almost 8 hours. The pain continued to get worse until I finally broke down and had my husband take me to the emergency room. After many tests they found that I had a ruptured appendix and I was taken into emergency surgery to remove it. Nothing like a birthday spent at a 5 star hospital with cocktails of antibiotics. One might choose to look at this as a bad thing but since the appendix ruptured I had an infectious disease doctor dedicated to my case. During one of his visits I sheepishly asked, "I have a weird request, my husband and I are going to Kenya in November and wondered if you could write us a prescription for Anti Malaria medication.?" He was surprised but said he would check. The next day he came in after checking and wrote up the prescription for both of us. One last thing we needed to do.  Some might think an appendectomy on your birthday is bad luck but seems to me that it was quite lucky. At least this didn't happen in Kenya and I got something off of my to do list...

I bought a new camera for this trip. It is amazing. It is an Olympus sp-800uz. We found one refurbished for $200 bucks. It has a 30X optical zoom. I have used SLR cameras in the past but still think for travel you are better off with a point and shoot, especially with the technology that is available today. We took it to Disney's Animal Kingdom to practice our Safari shots and then went to Sanaa to eat at the Animal Kingdom Lodge where we got even more practice shooting the Animals right outside our window while we ate.  The Animal Kingdom Lodge reminds me so much of the Lodges that we are going to be staying in while in Kenya. We are getting so excited and maybe that is why my heart dropped when I got the call from Lion World Tours... When the words, "Your flight has been canceled." came out of her mouth I stifled my groan. Then she said "We can get you on a flight Nov. 2nd and we will put you up in a 5 star hotel that night in Nairobi" I am so excited. That extra night in Nairobi is going to give us a night to rest before starting our safari. I had been concerned that the one and only night we spent on Mount Kenya was going to be a very tired one. Now we will be well rested and ready to hit the trail. Maybe our luck is changing.
