A VERY early rise set me on my path to get to Urugauy today. A three hour ferry and I was transported from the bustling buenos Aires to a laid back South American neighbour in Montevideo. The usual search for a cash point to get some local cureency, a guessing of the exchange rate and a successful hunt for change (fluttering your eyelashes at the local bank cashiers) meant I was soon set up for action. This city steps down a gear from BA and has  heaps of beaches to boot. Today´s pretty stormy but that can only add to it´s characterof curmbling art deco buildings side by side with 1970s creations. The side roads to the beach from the life filled squares reminds me of the streets in Baz Luhrman´s Romeo And Juliet...some of the facades looke like deacying theatres and come in a pretty mix of colours but are grubby like some of the wandering homeless, junkies and drunks that you always bump into. The architectuire´s a mismash of a time gone my and a 1970s Benidorm. But Montevideo´s no Spanish beach resort. The streets are scattered with little cafes and bars with decor to rival any major city. There´s several theatres and live music venues. Yes it´s no Buenos Aires but it´s well worth checking out. The sunnier the better as dull days don´t show it up to it´s best.
I´m offically the only person from Europe around and English is nobody´s forte here. But that can only help me learn the lingo more quickly. I´m also one of only two girls in this hostel which is pretty empty, but it´s a good chance for me to catch up on reading, writing and learning and I have the luxury of my own room which probably won´t be happening for a while again....Montevideo is my chill out zone for a day. Tomorrow I´m off to nearby Colonia, the dreaded backpack will be hoisted again.
