. 2nd mile into a mountain trail.......straight up. I wanted to take a picture so I stopped for a minute....plus I needed a little break. Little did I know Matt was coming up behind me. His comment as he passed...."you're going to slow"! Snapped his picture as he went by me and I was off. I spent the rest of the race trying to catch him. 3rd & final mile....down hill....straight down hill...except for the last 1/2 mile....back up a hill to the finish line! Wet pavement and slick. I did everything I could to keep my balance without falling face first while holding my camera and towel.....all the while watching the back of Matt and trying to figure out how I was going to catch him! I had a nice lady I met at the starting line help get me up the last hill...if she would not have been there I would have walked...again! I was able to pass her right at the end but NEVER caught Matt. First time he has ever beat me in a race. I did congratulate the lady at the end of the race and thanked her for helping me finish. I was able to get a shot of Moli finishing. Her first comment to me was....."I did not like this". Really?? Never knew she didn't like running...espically something like this craziness. One of the sponsor's for the race was Hawaii Sports Chiropractic. Moli was starting to like this a little bit....she signed up for a massage....a complete massage. Brian, Matt & I decided to follow her lead and get a massage too. Awards were given out while getting the massages. I somehow WON my age group
. The nice lady I ran with most of the way won hers too. I was shocked! Brian missed placing in his age group by 20 sec. He will be moving into the "older" age group in 3 days. Moli ended up being the real winner of the day. We were standing around talking after our massages and the announcer called her up to the awards table to give her the 2nd Overall award! Somehow the chip timing system made a mistake...we have still not figure it all out yet. Anyway, Moli told the announcer she did not get 2nd overall and she should not take the award. A long conversation with the announcer....no one could hear. She walked away to the whole crowd cheering for her. Evidently the commander of the base was watching this conversation. Once all awards were given out, the commander took the microphone and called the 2 overall winners (male & female) & Moli back up in front of everyone. He congratulated the winners and then looked at Moli and said you deserve the "all-american" award....."we need more honest people like you today in the world we live in". Shook her hand and the crowd stood and clapped again! I tried to get pictures but was so nervous for her. everyone started to leave and the commander asked her stay around because he wanted to talk with her. The commander then brought a photographer over to her and had her fill out a form so he could "send her something" for her honesty and integrity! She hopes he sends her a t-shirt...if you can imagine that! Once she was finished with the commander, a guy who had won a "door prize" in the random drawings walked up to her and gave her his $50 gift certificate to P.F
. Chang's Restaurant!! He told her she deserved the gift card instead of him and to take her family out to dinner. Wow! What a morning. This will be something we will remember forever.
Headed back to hotel to shower up and off to Pearl Harbor. Really a special place to visit and I am so glad we took the kids to see this place. A lot of history and military education today. We spent about 2 hours at the memorial. We then headed to the outlet mall. Not really much at the mall but was suprised Hawaii had one! Found the closest Walmart to pick up some breakfast items and drinks. Back to hotel after a long day. Kids and Brian took a nap while I did some laundry down by the pool. I was watching people go by and saw a beautiful rainbow! A great ending to our afternoon here in Honolulu. Headed out to Cheeseburger in Paradise for dinner.
All of us are really tired tonight. Have another big day planned tomorrow....hopefully we can stick to our plans. Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay and hiking Diamond Head. Heading out early.....
What a day! Left hotel for our 5K race at 5:25 am. We parked in the "event parking" area at Camp Smith military field. We had no idea where we were going so we just followed others to the starting/line-up area. We were given directions to pick up a chip which matched our race numbers and attach the chip to our ankle. We drank some water, checked out course map, & watched other "runner's" get ready. The rain began to fall so we tried to stay "under cover" until race time. Headed to start line and found our places at the start. Brian - up with the fast people, me - in the middle & the kids not far behind me. I carried my camera with me so I could try to catch the action. Sorry the action photos are a bit blurry but that's the way I was feeling during the race...blurry...and wondering why in the world I signed us up to do this!! Final directions were given and we were off!! All 240 of us. First mile...Up Hill....breathing heavy. I knew I was in trouble when I wanted to walk in the first mile
