Because of the altitude in which it grows, high enough up to be actually in the clouds, Monteverde is known as a Cloudforest. As you can probably guess, the trees here rely on water from the clouds rather than from rain, this is the difference between a rain- and cloud-forest. Other that that I couldnīt really tell much difference, it still pi**ed it down the whole time we were up there.
If you are researching this for your own trip, you canīt really go wrong with monteverde backpackers hostel, plus I wouldnīt advise booking anything in advance, as everything can be sorted out when you get there, and you can get a bit more info about what there is available.
The best part of our trip to Monteverde was the Sky Walk, Rail and Trek. The Walk was a guided tour, over a trail and suspension bridges criss crossing the cloudforest valleys, we got to see a fair bit of wildlife as well as some breathtaking views all the way to the ocean. The highlight was however definately the sky trek. We were taken up to the top of a the reserve and then zip wired down 10 seperate runs, over the cloudforest, up to a max height of 150m. It was a great way to see the scenery, but if we had known, for more of an adrenaline rush try X-Tremo, which is apparently much faster.
The second day we trekked for about 5km in the Santa Elena cloudforest (next to Monteverde), pretty much more of the same really!
Next Stop: San Jose and then Panama!
