The hippies were responsible for first finding of Calangute Beach in Goa, although one or two of other beaches in Goa have now taken that badge, however, Calangute is all about package holiday Brits and Western tourists, bringing the British pub and a full English Breakfast.

It was empty of tourists when we arrived, we had our hostel to our selves which always a bit spooky in a 'Shining' kind of way. Calangute beach was awash with Indian tourists of every age splashing around, fully clothed, in the sea. When we walked down we were mobbed for a photo-call. People formed a que and took photos of us. After thirty or so photos there seemed no escape and we had to leave the beach.

I'm a winner
I'm a winner
A man on a motorbike came up beside us and asked us to open an envelope. Surprisingly I had won, one of four great prizes. All we had to do was take a taxi to a hotel and sit for an hour presentation. It smelt of time share. We explained we were travellers not rich holiday makers, but the guy said he would get 1000 rupees if we sat for the hour and we would get a prize. Foolishly, with not much else to do, we agreed.  Two hours later, the motorbike man looked pleased, the timeshare sales guy looked annoyed, and we had won $1000USD worth of free holiday in Bali or Thailand. If anyone wants the prize, its transferable and they are most welcome to it.

Masala Dosa

With the beach out-of-bounds and the weather very wet, we spent most of our time in Plantain  Leaf restaurant, highly recommended for cheap, excellent quality food. The Masala Dosa was 30p!
