Off we trundled to a pretty little town called Caraz, checked into our cheapest hostal yet, 2 pound and 50 p, for a rock hard double bed and shared hot showers, nice. We heard the best place to eat was Cafe de Rat, thats right the Rat Cafe.
The next morning we took a taxi to Yungay, a town famous for featuring the worst natural disaster in the entire Andes! An earthquake in 1970 loosened 15 million cubic meters of granite and ice and dropped down the mountain at a speed of 300km/h. The entire town, same size as Clevedon, 18,000 inhabitants were totally buried. Another 50,000 people also died in other parts of Peru.
When we arrived in the new town, you could Clearly see this giant path of rubble covered in flowers and tombs. The spooky clue was the very top of the cathedral spiral was visible. We used the morning to go walking around a couple of beautiful lakes and check out the killer views of the giant mountains of Huascaran (6768m) and Chopicalqui (6354m).
