Where I stayed
1000 star hotel

After another overnight train from Lao Cai and a quick breakfast in Hanoi we mini-bussed for 4 hours to Halong City, then onto a tender to take us to the Junk for our overnight stay in the "1000 star floating hotel".
Lunch of seafood, rice and other delicacies, then off to the 2000 spectacular limestone outcrops that make up Halong Bay. We kayaked past floating villages, through a tunnel into a grotto where the singers in our party tried out the great acoustics. Once again we were unable to escape the incessant vendors who were keen enough to row out to our junk to try to sell their wares. The overnight anchorage is packed with junks doing the the same overnight stop. In the late afternoon we chilled on the top deck with drinks to watch and photograph the sunset and then down the the lounge deck for another spectacular dinner. We were lucky enough to score the "Presidential Suite" and had a fantastic peaceful night helped along by a few after dinner drinks back on the top deck.
Day two on Halong bay we went to limestone caves before a lunch trip back to the dock to catch our minibus back to Hanoi where we have two hours to chill before a 13 hour overnight train to Hue.
Every bus trip is an experience in itself - there is no way either of us would consider driving here, they have an entirely different concept of using the roads that looks a lot like chaos to any of us but seems to work amazingly well for the  6.5 million people living in Hanoi. I think I would describe it as being calmly impatient!
And crossing the road is really scary - just walk slowly and hope like hell!
