Pleasantly suprised by the deluxe conditions on the bus - lots of leg room, very reclining seats, ´´cold´´ dog and black coffee for brekky! Even so, hugely tired when we hit the hotel around 9am. I did a Monasterio del Santa Catalina tour while M slept, then exchange -I slept while M internetted. Both suffering a little altitude sickness and we are only at 2500m - tomorrow we climb to 3800m !
The trip to Nazca along the Pan-American Highway took us thru some incredibly rugged terrain. The all too frequent road-side memorials are evidence of the nature of the road and the driving habits of the locals. Nazca exists as a tourist stop because of the <nazca Lines - large pictograms formed into the desert floor by the >Nazca people 2000 years ago - incredibly preserved by the arid conditions in this area. Also visited the Cementario and tombs of the ancient Ica-chinca people. The mummies preserved by the dry desert and cotton bindings. Off to Arequipa by tourist bus tonight with warnings about thieves, hijackers and treachorous road. Everyones feeling a bit dubious.
