Beautiful Island

Next morning we arrived at the port in time to catch a ferry that didn't leave as it was broken. After a long wait we finally caught another one and watched as the Island got bigger and bigger. There are 2 Perenthian Islands & we were headed for the backpacker friendly one. As we docked a km out from the Island and waited for a smaller boat to take us to shore (for a small fee!) We noted how blue and clear the water was and how green and jungley the Island was. It looked beautiful and not too many people were there. Unfortunately most of the rooms were full or overpriced - Malaysia is not budget traveller friendly sometimes. We ended up staying in the grottiest chalets with only salt water showers. My mosquito net was covered in droppings of some kind so I didn't use it. Each night it rained I got wet, but rain meant fresh water shower and that means you can get a lather from the soap. I think we showered twice that whole week and I didn't wash my hair once. The day we arrived was independance day and within hours we had our crew: a German (Felix), a Spaniard with a gorgeous accent (Louis) & two Dutchies (Raoul & Miriam). That night we bought small bottles of vodka and walked along the beach joining in whatever festivities we found. There were DJs, firetwirlers, fireworks and later some skinny dipping. A storm loomed in the distance and our naked bodies were lit up periodically. We danced to a DJ on the beach and then danced in another bar where only locals were dancing. Soon enough our crazy antics had a crowd of travellers dancing too. I went to bed around 3, but Ben stayed out with some Canadians we met earlier.
We spent our week having snickers shakes (devine), snorkelling with a group & by ourselves, swimming and diving. The snorkelling was amazing - better than the diving. We saw sharks, turtles and a school of bump head parrot fish with are gigantic. We also got to watch a snorkel test which is a tradition dive master when someone finishes their. The dive master has to drink a huge cocktail or beer through their snorkel. It looks rough. Perenthian Kecil was such a relaxing place and I truly recommend it.
