We made it back from Umphang despite me nearly puking half way from motion sickness. We saw a truck go past us with about 5 balaclava clad men holding big semi automatic weapons!! Then we saw the police following them, but never found out what happened. We had read that Chiang Mai was a cheap place with a big night market and more Wats. When we got there we realised how much had changed since our book was written. There is some fantastic shopping here though and I finally opened up my purse and spent some money on stuff. I found it is challenging to barter, but fun and the more the shop owners beg for just 10 more baht I can whine and say 10 baht less - pleeeeeeeeeeeeese and win. The 3 of us ate the best Indian meal ever and wandered around the night market for hours just checking out the town. We also decided to self medicate here. You don't need a prescription for things like amoxicilan (or valium) so we dosed up as Dave's ongoing sickness had finally infected us. Most of our time was spent in bars here. There are some great bars with live music down by the river and we had a fun time drinking beer and coolers outside the local 7-11. We got into it with a lady boy about the price of a cocktail and went to a club called Bubbles afterwards where it seemed they don't take kindly to you climbing up on the speakers to dance. The boys did more of the late nights than me though I tried to party.
