So we made it to (a very cold but sunny) New York 6 hours later than planned after delays at Melbourne waiting for the inbound Qantas A380 from Singapore to arrive and then industrial action by the security services team at the gate and then more delays in LA waiting for the Brisbane flight. As embarrassing as it is to admit it - we had Maccas for lunch at LAX - it really does taste different here (in a good way). Once we got to New York we got stuck in traffic in the taxi to the hotel after an accident giving Jan and the driver plenty of time to talk about cricket! Apparently there are 170+ registered cricket teams in NY!

Flying not being my favourite activity I have to say that after the "hospital strength" G&T (imagine a large plastic party cup with 3 small icecubes filled to the brim with gin and a mini can of tonic to go with it) I coped very well - the flight was only 13 hours instead of 14.5 which also helped. I haven't flown Qantas internationally for years - there's a reason - they are really stingy on the legroom front.  I thought with the introduction of the A380 it may have changed, unfortunately not! Lesson learned right there!
Anyway, we've taken things pretty easy today as we had dinner (pizza) at 11pm last night and then were awake again at 4:45am.  We took the subway to Brooklyn and walked across the bridge, walked to Battery Park with the intention of taking a ferry to the Statue of Liberty only to find out that no one has been able to get on to the island since Hurricane Sandy came through the city.  There are plenty of tour operators making a killing out of this now though selling "crusies" past the island at up to $100 a person. We had a chat with the security guard at the Staten Island Ferry terminal who told us to take the free SI ferry as it goes past the statue on the way and again on the way back - one for the list.  We also discovered that you can't get into the 9/11 Memorial without an advance ticket or queuing for about 3 hours - a bit more planning is required I think but at least we've got the basketball and Ice hockey tickets already!

Times Square on a Saturday evening just as jetlag hit again was a bit of a mistake, it was like Oxford Street the weekend before Christmas but with enough neon to light a small country. That said, it was the perfect place to buy a universal charger for the laptop as the one I brought with me was missing the earth bar!

Leuk om jullie zo te volgen. Ik hoorde van Anniek dat jullie met haar gelunched hebben! Wij gaan van de zomer bij haar op bezoek.
Veel plezier en ik hoop dat het weer in Costa Rica wat beter is.

Hi guys - New York sounds great. Well done getting your ice hockey and basketball tickets. What a highlight that will be. Let us know how that goes. I expect the atmosphere will be great. Jo
