I decided to see Lausanne (on lake geneva) because of great review's from Lonely Planet.. Well they talked up the city so much it had no hope of meeting my expectations - I was expecting some kind of Shangri La. Instead I got in my opinion, a fairly average French-swiss city on a hill by a lake..

Geneva was pretty similar, but there was more to see and do, and the city seemed more alive, partly due to the fair that was currently on along the shore of the lake. It was pretty cool looking over the lake to the mountains of France on the other side. I was tempted to get one of the boat trips to the other side, just because. The hostel was typical HI standard - they seem to forget they are meant to be youth hostels not youth hospitals (that's more the atmosphere!).

It was nice walking around the fair at night, watching the local bands play and the city all lit up. The next day I went to the art gallery and most enjoyed the local swiss paintings (of mountains and valleys) - I may have said before, but I am a little tired of "maddonna and innocents" or "moses this" and "mary that.." number 427..

Oh one thing that was a bit strange about the location of the hostel was that it was a block away from the President Wilson Hotel. The poshest hotel in Geneva. Out the front one after the other was a brand new Bentley Continental, Lambo Gallardo and Ferrari (something a rather!) with the rest of the parking lot full of brand new mercedis, and a block away from the hostel was the red light district... interesting!

One more thing I just remembered, I had the craziest roomate in Geneva. He was in the bunk below me (an African guy, only relevant for later on..). He would come back to the room at 1:30am, switch on the light, get out his Mormon Bible and start reading it out loud! I asked him to please read it out in the hall so the rest of us could sleep, but he replied with something like "light goes off when I finish reading my bible"....

The next day a new guy from Holland entered our room and I told him about what happened the night before. So again, we're all asleep and again at 1:30 in the morning this guy comes in, switches on the light, opens his bible and starts reading. Again I asked him to go read it in the corridore and again he said no, that blah blah.. we all rolled over and put up with it and eventually he put his bible away.

But then, at about 4 in the morning he got up and again turned on the light and started reading.. this time I got out of bed and switched off the light.. he switched it back on.. this went on about 3 times, till I gave up.. I didn't want to provoke a crazy christian too much (sorry to sane christians) ... but i'd already provoked him and he started calling me evil, and something about black and white (among some kind of african words - I think I may be cursed..) and i think the words "blood clot"! :S .... I asked him to please be quiet.. but no, that just made him more agitated.. why should he be quiet at 4am! he's a man of the book.. he ended up calling me evil and throwing my towel on the floor!

Basically, I couldn't be bothered with him and just wanted to sleep, so I changed rooms...

But now I know why it's designed like a hospital....

(more about youth hospitals in france...)
