The next day I made a trip up to Parque Lauca stopping in Putre to arrange a tour, only to find a one day tour would cost US$80! So I decided IŽd try the second option and hitch hike up to the park, something IŽd never done in my life... Well it didnŽt work out so well and I ended up walking 5 km at an altitude of around 3,500 meters carrying my pack to get back to the main road. I was amazed that I did the walk without any trouble.. my time in Bolivia had really helped to acclimatise!
Once on the main road a nice Chilean guy Christian stopped gave me a lift on his way back to work in Bolivia. I told him where I wanted to get off and he seemed to know the place until he said šEsta es la fronterra" (the border).. well not quite what I was looking for but I got a great view of the park and huge snow covered mountains and lakes.
I realised the park isnŽt really easy to see on your own, so I got on a bus heading back to Arica. The sneaky little conductor guy wanted to charge me $5 for a little trip to the entrance of the park until I bargained him down to about $8 to get back to Arica - all the money was going into his pocket anyway!
