By three methods we may learn from wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; second, by imitation which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.  – Confucius

Dee-Dee, you rock my world!  You have been in NYC for only several months and yet look at all you've accomplish by sticking it out!  You have found your niche!

Gosh, where do I begin?  This weekend was reminiscent of our earlier years when we would go out and explore; fearless, excited, just the two of us fending for ourselves.  Remember the time we first started at Wells and were the only asians on campus.  We fought through the racism to eventually leave the school as the girls who brought LA street rhythm and dance to an otherwise banal student body; we emerged as the infamous handball champs even the boys were afraid to compete against; and on top of all this making the principal's academic list.  Don’t mess with the Daruthayan girls!

Please do not ever discount the great work you have done being my older sister.  I am who I am in large part because I had you to help pave the way.  I see now how challenging it must have been to be my older sister, but you did it with grace and courage.  In high school, it helped that I was your younger sister:  your natural affinity to drama, literature, and art pushed me to tap into a part of my brain I didn’t think existed.  Besides, what better way to get to know the local asian beauty than to befriend her little sis?

It is heartwarming to see how much you have blossomed this past year – and in the past 2 months.  You have overcome some pretty insurmountable obstacles, the kind most people either are not able to do or take many, many years to achieve.  Yes, it is in no small part due to your amazing support system.  However, it is also mostly your doing; staying optimistic, courageous and dedicated to who you want to be.  None of these qualities are easy to maintain and yet you have.  If I were in your shoes, I am not sure if I would have been able to survive.  I am so proud of you.  Keep up the great work and please continue to be my inspiration.

Continue to defy gravity!

P.S.  I apologize for being so verbose – I didn’t even have a drink!
