For our 25th wedding anniversary, Doug surprised Mary with a two night stay at the Garden Gables Inn in the Berkshires on their way to Maine.

Upon arrival Wednesday evening, we strolled around Lenox, which is a beautiful little village, before deciding to eat at Frankie's, a local institution.  Mary chose the Trout Almondine with Haricots Vertes, while Doug chose Chicken Saltimbacca with Haricots Vertes and Ricotta and Potato Gratin.  Delicious!

On Thursday, we spent the day at the Hancock Shaker Village, then the Furnace Run Winery, owned by the folks who own the Inn.

Hancock Shaker Village is the actual site of a Shaker community, and its story fascinating.  It seems that the Shakers were way ahead of their time in things "green" and in their use of anything new (the automobile, technology) that would help them achieve simplicity and harmony.  The village is powered, in part, today, using solar energy.  Architecture is stunning, particularly the "Round Barn" built in 1826.  Our docent for part of the self-guided tour was Rebeckah - wonderful stories, history and singing voice, who also demonstrated to us the "shake", used to de-stress.

Upon leaving Shaker Village, we made our way to Furnace Run Winery, owned by John and Erica Viccaro, owners of the Inn.  John and his sister purchased the apple orchard some twenty five years ago, started the winery about fifteen years ago, and purchased the inn six years ago.

Dinner Thursday was at the Bombay Indian Restaurant, on the shores of a lake.  Our server "allowed" us one question each about the menu, and the item asked about became our choice for dinner as he grabbed the menus from our grasp!  Delicious food - don't know what we had, though!
