La Paz to Copocabana
The first ride today with the new group turned out to be a day to remember. Our original plan was to ride from La Paz to Puno and visit Lake Titicaca from there, however, because of strikes in Peru the country was off the itinerary for a couple of days. Our other option was to visit Lake Titicaca on the Bolivian side.
After a good training ride with the new clients we were ready to start our adventure. The ride out of El Alto is very slow as the traffic congestion and smog create an assault on the senses. We finally arrived at the outskirts, passed the last police check and hit the open road, soon finding ourselves riding the shores of Lake Titicaca with its miles of villages hugging the steep shores. What a site, many clients commented that we could be in the Mediterranean. After a great picnic lunch we finally came across the small ferries which take you across an 800 m stretch of the lake so you can ride on to Copacabana. These ferries all made of wood took four motorbikes together and the captain strikes out first with wooden poles and then with an outboard for the 15 minute trip across. On the other side we rode then high into the hills to see the breathtaking views of the lake on perfect rolling bitumen roads, it was an hour of exhilarating riding until we came around the last bend to see Copacabana nestled into the shore. We stayed the night at the beautiful Hotel Rosario, each room with sweeping views of the lake, after a few sundowners on the verandah, and a great meal we all decided that Peru could wait a few days. Copacabana was great.
