Copacabana to Cusco

This morning we left Copacabana at 745am on a sunny cool morning for the 8 km ride to the Bolivian border, the process was relatively quick, friendly and painless, we then proceeded to the Peruvian side, it s always easier to leave a country than to enter. The boss of the Customs was late so we waited for 15 minutes for him to arrive, his offsider started the process which took about 2 hours to process all of the bikes and the Support vehicle, it took time but it worked, we were happily heading away from the border observing the odd rocks on the road left over from the strikes of the previous days. We had a big day ahead of us as we still had about 520 km to go.

We made Puno by midday and continued through Julliacca before stopping for lunch on an isolated soccer field on the high plains After a hearty, healthy lunch we ploughed on ever aware of the distance still to cover before darkness. The next couple of hours of riding across the high, isolated plains was breathtaking. At about 5 pm we reached the town of Sicuani, stopped for fuel and refreshed ourselves a little after the hours on the bikes. With 145 km to go we all headed for Cusco, as darkness fell the riding got more challenging however we were all soon in Cusco, tired, weary but excited to be back on track and in this most exciting town. We had a great dinner at the Hotel Munay Wasi and all drifted off for a well earned rest.
