. Essentially they were taught how to call the whales and instruct them to splash the audience ( a hand movement). they did a great job and got completely drenched. So much so that we had to buy both kids and Chris new outfits after the show to wear on the drive home! They were each given a lovely wooden "whale tail" necklace for their trouble which they have been wearing ever since. When we got back that night c and I watched some scary videos on you tube of sea world "whales turned bad" - turning on their trainers, which they put down to the whales being over tired and irritable. It definitely put another perspective on the day and makes you wonder if it's rights for the animals to be performing. It was also noticeable that none of the trainers get in the water anymore after the recent death of a trainer in the Florida sea world. But all that aside it was a great experience to see the animals and really special for the kids to learn a little "whale talk" and I would definitely do it again!
On yet another hot day in southern California we decided to take ourselves down the highway to sea world in San Diego. Wow! It was fabulous. Whatever your feelings are on using these wonderful sea mammals to perform tricks (it can feel a little too much like a circus at times) you can't fail to be blown away by seeing them up close. The whales and the bottle nose dolphins are just beautiful. Being silly tourists (and feeling very hot) we decided to sit in what's called the "soak zone" during the dolphin show. And soaked we were. It was thoroughly enjoyable being splashed and we were all left smiling and wet. A few hours later and a few degrees cooler, we made our way off to the whale show. Both Chris's aunt Maria and I had enough of getting wet and sat a few rows back but christopher and the kids once again planted themselves in the front row of the soak zone. This time though they were in for a real treat and we were about to experience one of the big highlights of the trip. They were sitting for a few minutes waiting for the show to begin when they were approached by one of the trainers who invited the kids to be part of the show
