Apologies to those who have tried to be in contact but we have been without cellphone and data reception. Unfortunately, that theme continues with the exception of intermittent wifi - strange but true. We have spent a week in yosemite and the pictures should tell the story all by themselves of the magnificent scenery; especially a spectacular sunset. I will though, attempt to retell what for me was an inspirational story told to us on a tour by the ranger; kimon, i hope that u enjoy it.

El Capitan is a 1 km vertical face. In the 1920s the founders of mtn climbing gathered at camp 4 in the Yosemite valley to discuss their climbing techniques and what was working and what was not. Camp4 is known as the birthplace of mountain climbing. Interesting enough the founder of the patagonia clothing brand was among these initiates. It was not until 1957 when El Capitan was eventually conqured. It took over 47 climbing days over 18 calendar mths to achieve the feat. Today, it still takes an average of 4 days to do the climb. Proof of this was the spotted rock face at night with flickering headlamps. The record though for a solo climb is 23 hrs held by a woman and achieved only in 1993. No one has done a free climb.

This is my tribute to El Capitain, the name i insist julian and georgia now call me.
