  Guten Tag!!

Well we left Melbourne on Friday 25th July bound for Frankfurt Germany, full of excitement to be flying for the first time on Emirates. To say it was a long flight isn't really true because there were 3 flights in total to get us here, each about 7 hours long.

Unfortunately our stop in Dubai was quite short and this combined with about 500 other flights leaving Dubai around the same time as ours meant the airport was jam packed with people everywhere, and stopped us from finding a nice birthday present for Ross! We got a feel for the heat in Dubai in the 2 minutes we spent on the tarmac boarding the flight to Frankfurt, it was only around 8.30am but already felt like the mid 30s!

We have been in Heidelberg for a week now, Ross has been working hard at SAP in Walldorf (yeah right!), which is about 10 minutes by train away from Heidelberg, so easy to get to. Heidelberg is a very old university town (Germany's oldest university), and while most of the students are away in July and August for their summer break about 2,000 tourists take their place each day...! Most are day trippers on bus tours to see the castle and walk along the famous main shopping strip (one of the longest in Europe).
The weather this week has been fantastic, around 30 each day which is hot for here - no air-conditioning which is seeing Ross wear shorts and sandals to work but no socks! The only problem with the hot weather is the bees here are very aggressive and seem hell-bent on drinking your beer or radler before you do!!

Here are the highlights of the week:
Eating and drinking in Neunheim (suburb across the river)
Visiting Heidelberg Zoo
Colleen spending the afternoon at the local pool on the hottest day of the week
Falling in love with the European fashion stores again
Ross trying to photograph the lightening storm on Thursday night
Sampling the different, hearty German dishes like flammkuchen and trying to figure out the German-language menus (most places have an English-language menu on standby)
A night walking tour of the streets in the old town centre
Drinking radlers, pilseners and hefeweizens in lots of the bars around town
Visiting Strasbourg in France on Saturday (3 hours each way on the trains!) and enjoying the French pastries and dinner in Petite France
Getting used to the trains, trams and busses to get around town
Witnessing a street brawl between two French girls - started on their bikes, ended on the cobblestones :)

The week has gone pretty quick overall, but we've been making the most of our time here. We're off to Moscow on Saturday so may get to do another update before that, otherwise we will as soon as we can!
