Arriving at the small border town of Huay Sai, we wanted to head out and explore this town that looked like it was at least 50 years behind the rest of the world.  Somedy, our guide, insisted that it was too hot for us, so we sat down to lunch at a little roadside family restaurant (I'm sure they killed the chickens in the back room) for lunch.  Each meal, sweetly, came one at a time as the cook was only working with one wok.  This gave us time to get introduced to our new best friend BeerLao.  Never ask for Lao Beer...no one will understand what you are saying.  Highly recommended though!  Once we were fed and half drunk, then it was time for the tour.  We visited the temple.  An ornate building surrounded by hundreds of little bamboo huts where the people live.  On our way around town we ran into a volleyball game and were invited to join in.  As we moved along, we were also invited to join in on some rice wine at someone's house...all you need to know is "Saw-ba-dee" and "Kop-Chai"  and your in like flint.
Finally, the next morning we were off on our boat trip down the Mekong River, the part of this trip that I most looked forward to.  It would not disappoint.
