So, I've figured out why I haven't been feeling like myself. At first I thought it was whatever virus I had picked up in the grotty hostels, but it's not. It's the layers. People are filled with layers. When you meet people on the road you only get the top layer because you only know them for a day and sometimes just minutes. You get information, data about their trip. Where are you from? How long are you traveling for? Where have you been? Where are you headed? The longer someone has traveled the shorter their story gets. They tire of telling their own story. It's the superficial layer that, in the end, no one remembers anyway. I can't remember who is going where, for how long and the only reason I know where they're from is because their accent is usually the giveaway. In the last two days in Christchurch I learned how important the layers are to my well being.
Ann, a woman from Vancouver that I've been bunking with, joined me again for three nights in Christchurch and on that first night I ran into Alison, a woman from Sydney that I had met here last time I passed through. We've spent a lot of time together in the last two days. We shared beautiful meals and great bottles of wine. But they showed me their layers. They both have beautiful stories about why they are here that they shared with me and challenged my reasons for being here. We laughed together and shared the trials of life. It felt like I was with friends.
I can't report that I did much in the way of tourism. I had already spent time in beuatiful Christchurch and seen the sights. My goal was to rest and feel better. I never expected the best medicine to be the layers that these women shared with me. We part ways tomorrow. Ann is heading to Aukland briefly and then to Australia where she will meet up with a friend and look for work. Al is heading out in a few days to create a new life for herself back home. I catch the Stray bus for Kaikoura and head to the North Island. Separate ways, but all having shared great memories of the layers of our lives.
I miss you even more tonight, because of the layers you share with me. Thanks, a.
