Wow! So I'm safely arrived in Houston. The place is a complete and utter mess. I apologize for not getting an entry out before today. I'm currently sitting in the parking lot of a TireMax store snagging their internet connection since the one in my hotel, along with the phones, is non-functional. Hurricane Ike has really messed things up for the people here, though that doesn't seem to dampen their spirits.

Well, the flights were all very nice. No baggage lost, flights were all on time (or early!). This should have been my warning that things were not going to go well. They had just gotten power back about two hours before I arrived at my hotel, so thankfully I was able to check in. The only real problem I've been having is getting a hold of my contact person so that I can start working. This has been resolved, though, thanks to the diligent efforts of Paul and one of his former students who now lives and works here in Houston for MCHD. The person has offered me a place to live for free while I'm down here (along with another Paramedic Student) so I'm currently in the works to see what it would take to get a partial refund from my hotel if I leave on Monday. I dunno, we'll see.

Wow... so big culture shock. Where to begin? When I got off the plane I headed for the rental agency that I had reserved my car with. The agent, probably thinking she was doing good, talked me into getting an upgraded car for $140 more because she said the car I had reserved was not sufficient to get through parts of Conroe that were still flooded. So instead of the Dodge avenger I had planned on, I ended up in a Jeep Liberty. Very comfortable little vehicle, actually.

Anyway, bit by bit the power is coming back on in the city. The wind damaged a lot of property and there are a lot of signs that were blown down. Glass, debris and billboard cloth litters the streets of The Woodlands, where my hotel is located. This is actually a pretty swanky part of town, no less so. I'll have some pictures later, I've barely left my hotel room. My cell phone doesn't work here, though for some odd reason I can still send and recieve text messages. I managed early Tuesday morning to pick up a pre-pay cell phone.

Anyway, will update more as I can. Bye!
