"--- you don't reach Serendib by plotting a course for it. You have to set out in good faith for elsewhere and lose your bearings ...serendipitously." John Barth, The Last Voyage of Somebody the Sailor

I've turned into a movie addict. Well, not quite, but some days it feels like that. Actually, I've always been a movie addict, I just don't indulge myself as much as I could sometimes. Since arriving at my sister's just over a week ago I've watched more TV and movies then I've probably watched in the past year. Now who's to blame? Me.

Every decision we make in life is our own. That is, every decision we make after we move out of our parent's house. Until the time we are old enough to move out, our parents do have a say in our decision making. Once you are a certain age you can headout on your own and make all your own decisions. So what about our bosses? They
tell us what to do all the time. Yes they do, but it was our decision to take that job in the first place and so we've given up the ability to make certain decisions. Call it decision making by proxy. Until you decide to take your (conscious) decision making capabilities back, in certain situation, you have subrogated them to someone else, in those situations. You can make the decision to quit your job at any time. Or in my situation, my body made the decision for me since my conscious self wasn't listening.

It looks like my writing topics are being chosen by the Tao. Now that's a new one for me. The "Tao Te Ching" was reportedly written, according to legend, by Lao-tzu over 2500 years ago in China. I've started reading "Change your Thoughts-Change Your Life" by Wayne Dyer. More on that later. In the past couple of weeks I've read Deepak Chopra's, "The Third Jesus". I also purchased "A New Earth-Awakening to your Life's Purpose" by Eckhart Tolle, started reading it, and realized I didn't buy it for me. I lent it to Katrine after reading the first chapter. We'll see if it's time for her to start her own Journey.

So I went on a book buying spree. I still have about a half dozen books to read that I borrowed. I might get around to reading those other books, someday. For now I needed to read these other books. I also needed to watch some TV and movies. Maybe not as much TV as I have watched, but some of it did come to me for a reason.

So why the new books? I was given a gift card for Chapter's/Indigo from the kids before I left last week. Some of you know why they did that. The rest of you can guess. I walked around the bookstore one day and grabbed the books that really caught my eye. There were a few hundred, or even a thousand, that I would have liked to
have grabbed. But I settled for 3 and still have some funds left on the card to spend on another book or two.

The weekend after arriving at Murielle and Shawn's I helped them get settled into their new place. They had to buy a new wall unit to put their entertainment center in. My sister asked me to wire all the components as she knows I've done a lot of that in the past. I can see how people get frustrated with this stuff. There must be a hundred connectors on the receiver unit to control all the different components. After I connected everything we realized that the cabinet wasn't deep enough for the receiver and the cables protruding out the back. The back of the cabinet has a 2 inch hole to run all the cables out. Fat chance that was going to happen. So Shawn cut a hole in the back to make everything fit. I could go out on a tangent and compare that to life but I won't at this time. I'll save it for my book.

Now that I know what I should be doing in writing my books it's harder keeping the abridged version here. I want to expand on the topics, but then that would defeat the purpose of my second book.

Now that the entertainment center was working we watched a few movies....each day. Ok, not quite that bad. One day I went through their DVD collection and came across the movie "Serendipity" with John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. I had heard about it years ago but never watched it. There were numerous other movies that I would have liked to have watched but I "had" to watch this one this evening for some reason. When Murielle put the DVDs in the wall unit she had put the French title forward so I actually had to pull the DVD out to read the English title. In my book that was a sign. I also didn't know what serendipity meant. And so, here is the abridged version of the movie:

"Jonathan and Sara bump into each other while Christmas shopping in Bloomingdale's, when they both grab the same pair of black cashmere gloves at the same time. They go for coffee at a café named Serendipity which, Jonathan discovers, is Sara's favourite word. A firm believer in the power of fate, she refuses to give Jonathan her phone number - instead, she writes her name and number inside the cover of a book, which she then sells to a second hand bookshop, telling him that if they are meant to be together, the book will find its way to him. Likewise, she makes him write his number on a banknote, which she promptly spends, telling him that if fate decrees it, the note will find its way back to her. A few years on, Jonathan and Sara are both engaged to other people, but each keeps thinking about whether the other is their true
soul mate, and then they start to see signs which they interpret as the fates trying to tell them something..."

Once that movie was over we flipped through the upcoming shows on the TV menu and saw that the movie "Fools Rush In" was about to start. It was on one of these channels that repeats the same movies. I notice within a few minutes that the movie started earlier then the TV menu stated. I don't like watching movies where I don't know how they started. I check and see what starts on the hour on a different channel and see the movie, "The Good Witch!", a made for TV movie. The write-up sounds promising.

"Serendipity. Look for something, find something else, and realize that what you've found is more suited to your needs than what you thought you were looking for."   Lawrence Block

The synopsis on the movie goes like this. Mysterious woman moves into haunted house in small town USA. Woman opens "new-age" shop that sells Celtic, metaphysical and Wiccan items. She is labelled a witch due to her unorthodox ways. Mysterious woman ends up charming most of the townsfolk with her sense of humour, advice and aromatherapy, with the exception of the meddling town busybody. The widowed town Sheriff with two young children ends up "falling" for the "witch".

And so, I ended up watching a show that ties in directly with everything that I've been writing about because the show I thought I wanted to watch didn't start at the time the TV program said it would. Signs, signs, everywhere a sign. Isn't it funny how people will label someone a witch because their thoughts and actions differ from what we would "normally" call "usual". I didn't find anything "Cassie", the good witch, did as very unusual. All she was really doing was opening up her eyes to see things from a different perspective and using "new-age" techniques to solve dilemmas.   All you have to do to see how any of this (what I've written) applies, is to shift your mind. The thing is, once you shift your mind you can never go back to the way you were thinking before. But then you might also get stuck with a partially shifted mind. Just like can't forget about the follow-through.

Other than watching way too much TV, I've started cycling again. Every second day I've been out on a bike ride. My expectations have been shattered again. The Island isn't as flat as I expected it to be. And since I'm staying somewhere with an ocean view, that means most roads go downhill. Which means I have to ride uphill to get
back. Things are going better than expected in that regard. The body has an amazing capacity to remember how it was when it was healthy.

More on what happened the week before I left, but not today, this is long enough. The Journey continues as it should.

I do have a few pictures of the record snowfall that we had here. Since I missed the record snowfall in Calgary the day I left, someone figured I should have one here. That's it, the locals can blame me.

"Serendipity is looking in a haystack for a needle and discovering a farmer's daughter." Pek van Andel
