I drove a lot further today then I had originally planned. But I'm where I wanted to be today even though I stayed an extra day in Brackettville. Life is good!
The drive to Marathon was very windy and uphill all the way. Then from Marathon to the Big Bend National Park Headquarters it was a lot of downhill. The final leg to Terlingua was very snaky. I made it here by 3h30 which was a little earlier then the GPS had calculated. The truck is running awesome. The elevation change was over 1000 metres.
I asked for a change in scenery and did I get it. The whole drive was breath-taking
After setting up the trailer I checked out some maps of the areas in the Park that I want to see. I noticed that the closest area I wanted to see was the Santa Elena Canyon. The Canyon was located about 25 kms off the main highway. I decided that that would be a good place to go this evening and take some pictures of the setting sun...hopefully.
As soon as I turn off the main highway there's a sign warning that the road is only accessible by high-clearance vehicles. The first few kilometres of the trail are extremely rough. If there were no loose bolts on the truck before, there definitely are some now. The going was a little smoother for the remainder of the trip...but not by much.
I took over 150 pictures this evening then drove back in the dark. My off-road driving lights came in handy. I won't write much as I'm heading back there in the morning to get some sunrise pictures
As I was writing this I remembered that the moon was rising low in the sky. I tried getting a few night shots. I have to figure out how to get the shutter to stay open longer than 30 seconds to take pictures of the stars. Then another night I'll head out of town into the deep dark night.
Enjoy the pictures. A lot of them are quite similar. I couldn't decide which were the better ones.
The Baja 500 X 10⁻¹ X 2 or 3 tomorrow.
