On Saturday I went to the airport to get Nick. Nick text messages me to say they've landed when I'm still parking the truck. Then he sends me another message "Oh NO! It's raining."  It's not the "Sunshine State" that we read on Florida's license plates. At least, not at the moment. I get into the parking garage elevator with another guy. We press the "Terminal" button. It doesn't stay lit. We're not moving. Press the button again. Doesn't stay lit. We're not moving. The doors are closed...we're stuck! After about the 5th press of the button the elevator starts moving. Phew!
I get to the terminal. Arrivals and baggage claims is on the 2nd floor. There are 2 escalators from the parking tunnel level. To the 3rd (departure) level and to the 1st (car rental) levels. How do I get to the 2nd level? There is an elevator but I'm a little leery about them at the moment.  I take the escalator to the 3rd level. There must be an escalator down to the second level? I wander one way...then the other...turn around in circles...I can't find an escalator. I'm about to go to the information booth when I spot the escalators to/from the 2nd level. I had walked right past them after getting off the escalator from the parking level. That's something I've noticed I've been doing lately. Missing "obvious" stuff. I focus on what's in front that I miss what's behind me. I finally find the Westjet baggage carousel. No Nick. No baggage. Within a few minutes Nick arrives. They had disembarked at the other terminal and had to walk further. His suitcase is the first one on the conveyor.
Nick was able to arrange a ride from Kingston to Toronto with a schoolmate on Friday. He stayed at his friends place in Mississauga on Friday night then received a ride to the airport with his friend's dad for the early flight. That was better than taking the bus from Kingston to the airport at 2 am. He passed through customs fairly quickly. There were problems with the plane scheduled to be used for the flight to Orlando. There was another plane available but there would be a 45 minute delay in getting it ready.  4 hours after his arrival at the airport and the plane is off the ground.
From the airport we drive to the Resort. The suite has 2 bedrooms and a sofa-bed. I've put my stuff in the master bedroom with the whirlpool tub, king size bed and shower stall. The second bedroom has 2 regular beds. The girls can sleep in the second bedroom and Nick can sleep on the sofa-bed. NOT! I move my stuff to the second bedroom. The girls are going to get spoiled in the master bedroom.
Nick helps me bring the food from the trailer into the timeshare suite...we have a full kitchen. I had been told we would be on the main floor of the complex but we end up on the 5th floor. The start of our stairs exercise program for the week. That done, Nick is hungry. We head to the pool area for some food at the bar. We ask the bartender for a menu and sit at one of the tables by the pool. The seats and tables are still wet from the earlier rain. We find a table where the umbrella kept the table mostly dry. We dry the chairs as much as possible. We decide what we want to eat and wait. The bartender and 2 other pool staff are chatting away at the bar. After about 10 minutes we figure we aren't going to be served. I walk to the bar and order our food. As I get up from my chair I hit the corner of the umbrella. I get drenched from the water stuck on top of the umbrella. My second shower of the day.
The sun is shining and it's quite warm. Nick and I lay by the pool for a couple of hours. There aren't many people in the resort this week. After supper we go grocery shopping. I'm feeding 4 instead of 1 now, 2 of them teenagers.
Sunday morning. The girls don't arrive until after supper. The whole day to do nothing. But first...we need an exterminator. One of the cupboards we had put some food in is crawling with ants. We pull out all the food, throw out the stuff infected with ants, and make sure there are no ants in the stuff we've moved onto the counter or in the other cupboards. That and breakfast done, Nick wants to work-out. The information we have indicates the 2 gyms are in the other complexes. We go to the first one...gym closed. The second gym is open...and empty. Nick has it all to himself. I go to the resorts main desk to report the ant infestation. They'll send someone right over. I walk back to the suite and wait. 2 hours later and still no exterminator. I call the main office, no one answers. I decide to walk over again. As I walk down the stairs, on the main floor, I find a guy walking out of a suite. He looks like the maintenance guy. I ask him if he is, he answers yes and then I tell him my problem. He comes up right away and sprays down the cupboard and behind the fridge. That problem resolved. Hopefully.
Nick and I go lay by the pool. Still no one else there. After a while I decide to go wash my truck. As I'm drying it a guy comes up to me and comments on how nice it looks. We chat a while when he comments that he hasn't eaten since homeless...and can't find a job. I give him a few dollars. It's Christmas time. I've just spent $5 to wash my truck. I figure I can spare a few dollars for someone down on their luck.
I get a text message from Katrine asking me which airline they're flying on. They're just arriving at the airport in Calgary. A while later I get a second text message saying they've made it through customs. We had concerns about Alexis flying out of country without a parent and what Customs would do. Katrine had a note from Louise saying it was OK. After supper Nick and I drive to the airport. There are rolling walkways between the parking garage and the terminal. Nick is in front of me. I start walking backwards at the same speed as the walkway. I'm not going anywhere. Nick looks back and notices I'm not next to him anymore. He has this quizzical look on his face and makes a comment. There's a lady coming in the opposite direction and notices what we're doing. I notice a smile come to her face. We get to the baggage claim area and check the arrivals screen. The plane is late. Nick asks if they post the arrival time when they land  or when the plane arrives at the gate. A few minutes later we get the answer. Katrine texts to say they're at the gate. Posted arrival time is when the plane lands. We notice numerous people who are waiting holding signs with names on them. Nick gets the bright idea that we should have done the same thing for the girls. Nick and I are chatting when we get jumped by Alexis. She had run off the escalator without us noticing. Katrine is stuck behind someone. She gets free and runs to us. Great big group hug! I notice a lady who has seen us and she has a big smile on her face.
We get the suitcases and head off to the parking garage. On the moving walkways the kids start fooling around and acting silly. Someone makes the comment to me that maybe I don't want to be seen with them. I have a feeling it's going to be one of those weeks.
