I took a drive north along Highways 1 and A1A today. The first part of the drive...to Daytona Beach wasn't that interesting. There were two exceptions. The first one was the biking fundraiser I passed on the highway. There were a lot of police cars in front and behind the 50 or so cyclists. It wasn't until I got closer that I realized that it was a Police Association fundraiser. I gave them a wide berth as I passed. Wouldn't want to piss any of them off. The second exception was further up the highway where I noticed about a dozen or so motorcycles coming in the opposite direction. They were in the passing lane going at a pretty good clip. I figured they better slow down before they passed those police officers protecting the cyclists. That's when I noticed that they were Motorcycle cops.
There was something about Daytona Beach that I really enjoyed. The fact that it was mostly deserted might have had something to do with it. There was just something about the look and the feel of the city that I liked when I drove up the main street. Another thing I found out about Daytona Beach is that you can drive and park on the beach. The sand is very compacted which makes it easy for anybody to drive there. They have access points at certain points. I drove for a while along the beach. It was fairly windy today so the waves were higher than I've seen on this Journey. That meant the Sea Spray also carried further and it looked like a sand storm off into the distance. When the place is busy it would be a great beach for people watching but I don't think it would be that great for sitting and relaxing. At high tide the water must come up to where the cars drive and then there's the place to park the cars. The slope of the sand isn't much. So, you would be either sitting in the water or have a row of cars between you and the water.
North of Daytona Beach to St. Augustine, my destination, was impressive. Heading out of Daytona Beach are the most amazing houses. Opulent and grandiose. The highway then followed along the Ocean and the houses were on the opposite side. I came to these new (gated) housing developments
I walked around for a while, then got back into the car for the drive back along the coast. That's when I noticed that the whipped up sea spray was leaving a smoggy film on my windshield and side windows. It was getting hard to see out.
Earlier in the day as I was driving through Daytona Beach I had stopped for lunch at Denny's. The place was filled with an assortment of Christmas decorations. There were oodles of decorations
I had a bunch of things I had seen which I wanted to mention...but I forget. Oh well! One day I'll think of it and have another random items blog. In 2 days I've driven over 500 kms along the coast. Time to hit the beach! Or...see a Space Shuttle launch.
