I drove to Alamogordo then headed south to the White Sands National Monument. I haven't the faintest idea why the Americans call theirs natural areas "Monuments". I've come across this numerous times and have always wondered why. Isn't a monument a statue or structure of some sort to commemorate an event or person? Definitions? Sure can confuse a person.

The White Sands look just like snow. They even rent sleds so that you can slide down the hills.
