During a stroll along the waterfront this afternoon, a good friend asked me, "What are your goals for the trip?" It was a very reasonable and sincere question, one I had encountered a number of times in the past few weeks.  Its a question I ask my traveling friends before they depart on their adventures.  Nevertheless, I had yet to come up with a satisfying response--that is, until this afternoon when I told her this: my goal is to not have a goal.

Once I said it, I realized that this response really summed it up--why I started dreaming about this trip a year ago, and why I am still heading out three days from now. For those of you who know me, you can confirm that my typical life is far from aimless. I have been busy with school, friends, extracurriculars and other ambitions for as long as I can remember. As my college graduation approached, however, I began to wonder what it would be like to try out an alternative M.O., and I wondered what I would learn about life--and myself--if I tried out this atypical lifestyle for awhile.

So, this blog will record the musings and reflections that arise out of my attempt at an aimless, nomadic lifestyle in a land where people don't know who the heck I am or what I want to do or what my agenda is. Actually, I hope to be without agenda most of the time!

If you have any advice about this new foreign life, send it my way.

At last...
I'm a long-time member of the aimlessness club. It's good to see you've finally signed up. I think you'll enjoy it.

I love the fact that you have set out without goals. It is truly the best way to travel. One fellow nomad told me to: smile often, accept invitations from strangers (within reason of course) and stay open to the moment.
