I just got back from Canada Olympic Park - often scorned by Calgarians who have the Rockies on their doorstep but still good by Australian standards! It's excellent to know that I can finish university for the day, jump on a bus and hit the slopes twenty minutes later. It's also excellent for the kids who snowboard here to be able to use a half pipe and what I guess we'd call a street course, with rails and stuff. I guess it doesn't compare to the Rockies in scenery (although the view of Calgary at night is nice) but it sure has a lot to do! Having hosted the Olympics they have a luge track and humungous jumps too.
I was happy to settle for mere skiing however, a bit hesitant given that my experience amounts to one week at Mt Hotham on my year ten ski trip
Just finally getting into the snow sports was excitement in itself. Chelsea is pretty keen to try snowboarding next time as am I (I don't think she likes being bossed around by her boyfriend), particularly since I'll be snowboarding all weekend at Panorama (did I mention I'm going to BC for my 21st birthday?) and would prefer not to fall down all the time.
I'm going to Vancouver in less than a week. Chelsea's planning our itinerary which includes Vancouver Island, Salt Spring Island, and perhaps even Seattle, although I'm loathe to set foot on US soil after my last experience in Los Angeles. Still, it's only a ferry ride away. It's always tempting just to pop across to another nation for a day
Following that, I have midterms (scary), followed my 21st birthday (3rd March, remember?) and then Panorama, hopefully a trip up to Edmonton sometime in early April, followed by final exams (worse - particularly as I'm skipping my East Asian Studies midterm to go to Panorama so my final will be weighted at 60 percent), and then bye bye West Coast, hello East Coast!
Meanwhile I'm having a great time here in Calgary with all these new experiences and cool people. I'm really, really glad I came. If you're thinking about travelling, do it! It's more worthwhile than you can imagine.
