Airlie Beach is the gateway to the Whitsundays.....I should be writing tourism brochures....We stayed in Mango House or the Villa as we called it, 2km from Airlie Beach in Jubilee Pocket. The accomodation was lovely, and it had a nice pool too. We'd no problem splashing out after our recent luck in Brisbane, Noosa and one or two other spots that weren't great.
There's a 30km walk one end starting at Airlie Beach. We walked about 10km of it before doing a u-turn to come back the way we came. While the more popular section near Airlie Beach was well worn and comfortable to walk, the further into the woods we got, it was creepier and creepier. We came across 4 snakes in the space of hour and a half on the track which was covered in leaves. Little or no chance of seeing them until the last second when they moved. It was a really hot day, with plenty of sunlight breaking through the trees. They're cold blooded and need to heat up to move quickly
The next day, we got a boat to South Molle Island, one of the 74 tropical Whitsunday Islands. Unlike most of the islands, South Molle has a pier in Bauer Bay where there's a resort. It's smaller and has alot less people on it than the other islands you are allowed visit. It also has some good walking tracks through the remainder of the island which has nothing on it. We came across some of Australia's wildlife there too. We were deciding whether we should go swimming at a deserted spot called Oyster Bay on one side of the island. At the same time we were getting into our swimming togs. We looked out and saw a shark fin cutting through the water about 30m off shore. Then saw a sting ray as we walked into the water. A dip to cool off at less than knee deep was as brave as we got after that. On the way back we came across another snake.

A game of spot the snakes???
. Whatever it was, they just didn't seem to be moving out of the way. One of the many similarities between myself and Indiana Jones is a hatred of snakes. So this took the enjoyment out of it, and we were obviously walking alot slower. The next day, we got a boat to South Molle Island, one of the 74 tropical Whitsunday Islands.
