Really good walk there to the top of Tomaree headland overlooking Nelson Bay and Port Stevens. You can see where the WWII artillary was mounted but the highlight is the view from the top. There's a crazy amount of spiders up there.
After a night in Shoal Bay town, we drove around to the headland on the other side at Hawks Nest town. It's called Yacaaba Headland and we did the walk to the top of that. It's formed by volcanic rock and it's a steep enough climb. We saw dolphins as we walked along the beach to get to the start of the walking trail.
The town of Hawks Nest is home to a colony of Koala's? And there's hawks in the area too as the name suggests? Maybe next time...........didn't see either.
Back in the car and heading north, we said we'd walk up Alum Mountain near Bulahdelah. This walk takes you up the mountain to where they used mine for Alunite. There's an old tunnel, quarries and overgrown tramways that were used for transporting rock. And grass trees.
We passed the "Green Cathedral" at sunset, which is a permanent open air church, before stopping in Harrington.
