El Chalten has a population of about 700, and is at the edge of the National Park of the glaciers. Itīs in the arsehole of nowhere and has no paved roads. But, the walks from here are tough and as scenic as either of us have come across.
We counted 2 places to stop as you travel through the desert to get to the town. Took over three hours from El Calafate which is fairly remote anyway. The clouds dump all moisture on the mountains as snow (and eventually compacts; glaciers) and so you have desert on one side of them. You can look out the window, driving through the desert, at one stage and see a massive glacier. Melting and breaking as it comes down the mountain over time, so theres a lake at the bottom with icebergs in it.
The Cerro Torre walk was good for such a variety of scenery; the glacier, lake and rocky mountain blah blah blah, as the photos show.
The guy in our hostel in El Calafate booked the bus and accomodation for us. He even told us what side of the bus to sit on for the best view and so that the rising sun doesnīt blind you.
