If I was very rich, I'd hire a plane and transport family, friends, colleagues and anyone else who wants to come to Tennessee in October. I'd hire a mansion - a pristine white clapperboard house with painted shutters and gingham curtains, rocking chairs on the porch and a 3-bar white fence around freshly mown lawns that stretch for acres to a shimmering lake with a background forest of trees in Autumn glory.
We cycle on superb roads past lots of houses like this, many with a flagpole proudly flying the Stars and Stripes. Tennessee is our favourite state so far. Our spirits are high. After the basic motel we stayed in last night we're heading to Nashville to bask in Southern luxury at the Hermitage Hotel
If I'd had to play word association games, when someone said "Tennessee" I'd have replied "Jack Daniels" and to Nashville "Dolly Parton". I'm expecting Nashville to be some kind of hick, country bumpkin town but as we crest the final hill there's a skyscraper skyline! Nashville is big, modern, multi-racial and under construction - there's building going on everywhere. I see my very first Obama/Biden election poster in over 2,500 miles of travelling across the country.
Our short term goal was to get to Nashville. We arrive in time to participate in happy hour and we linger over a superb dinner. We'll worry about the last leg of the trip after our final rest day tomorrow.
