Day 13 Mexican Hat Utah to cortez Colorado 101.6 miles 5,395 ft climbing

As we roll out of town at 7.11 a.m. we can see a pile of rocks with a brim and understand why Mexican Hat is thus called.  The legs are stiff after yesterday's marathon day but the wind has died and it makes a massive difference.  We ride with Jim, Dave, Tom and Don again.  It's a great day!

Forget Utah is home of the Mormons, Mitt Romney and freaky religious sects with weird sexual practices, Utah is stunningly beautiful.  Another glorious day amongst wonderful countryside and the road surfaces are generally good.  Today is not a day to be in the office!  We stop at a hippy cafe in Bluff and the owner is used to serving one person in the morining and one in the afternoon.  He's flustered to serve 6 people at once.  He has "issues with the cash register" i.e. not sure he's ever had to use it before.  The pace is slow, but hey man, the coffee is good.  There is a freshly baked poppy seed and banana loaf on the counter and we buy the whole cake.  There's a lot of climbing today but with frequent stops we clock up the miles.  We are going to miss the deadline of dinner at 6pm because we are the naughty group and we don't care.  We're on"the cycling vacation of a lifetime" (Trek Travel's strapline) as Dave repeatedly reminds us.

I'm craving fruit and salad but the diner is a dive and by the time we arrive there's little choice so it's more meat and potato but boy do we have a laugh over dinner.   Days like today are red letter days.  We go to bed not quite believing that we've cycled over 300 miles in just 3 days.
