Day 12:Tuba City Arizona to Mexican Hat, Utah 116.7 miles 4450 ft of climbing

Today was one of the most memorable day's cycling we've ever done because
(a) it's a flippin' long way (on bum roads)
(b) it was into a head wind all the way
(c) the scenery was spectacular as we cycled through the Navajo reservation.  W.  e saw wild horses, massive skies and crazy rock formations.  "It's so priddee" someone says.  Actually, it's not pretty.  English gardens and Swiss mountains are pretty.  This landscape is elemental, unusual, barren. It was impossible not to think of John Wayne, Clint Eastwood and cowboys and indians as we rode through Monument Valley in crisp sunshine.  For the first 50 miles we managed a peleton with (my favourites) Canadians Jim and Dave and also Tom, Don and Christian but we all fell apart after lunch so it was especially hard going with the wind whipping our faces.  We rode into Mexican Hat as the sun was setting.   David's saddle sores are so bad he pulled on an extra pair of padded underpants over his cycling shorts.  It's a sign of how tired everyone is that no-one batted an eyelid.

We dine at the Swingin' Steak, where we learn the owner, dressed in checked shirt, jeans and cowboy hat, rides recreational rodeo.  The choice is steak, steak or steak.  If I don't die from exhaustion, red meat overdose is gonna kill me.  My steak comes with refried beans and Texan toast, a piece of bread the size of a brick, because as Texan Jerry drawls, "Y'all know everything is bigger and better in Texas"
