I just finished an afternoon of, first of all, figuring out some of the public transport system so that I will no longer be spending all of my spending money for transportation.  When I took the taxi from Vienna to the Hotel Pyramide last night it only cost 18 Eur...this morning when I tried to take one from the hotel to my new hotel in inner Vienna it was going to cost me 32 Eur...go figure!!  So, I bit the bullet and since it was daytime and I was able to read things clearly I learned what train to take and it was amazing...!!  It cost 3.70 Eur and some very kind people helped me hoist my bag up and down where ever need!   No Problem!!  Encouraged by this success I decided to take the train out to the airport tomorrow morning (I have to be there by 9:50am) and it is costing me the princely sum of... wait for it...1.70Eur!!!  I am now staying in the Hotel Astoria for tonight (right in the middle of Vienna close to everything).
The other major thing that I did this afternoon was go to the Hofburg Palace Musem and spent a wonderful afternoon immersed in the lives of Emporer Franz Joseph and his lovely and much touted wife Empress Elizabeth (or Sisi as she was fondly known)... I was truly transported back into their lives!!    Finally as I was walking back to the Opera House area there was a huge demonstration coming down the street toward me starting with many police in cars and motorcycles...I asked a news film crew what was happening and they were very informative - this was a demonstration of doctors - apparently the health care is being cut back with generic drugs being substitued by pharmacies etc. etc all of it very familiar!
And finally...another minor event that happened today (the film crew informed me!!) - the government was dissolved (it was a coalition) today!  An election will be held in September...  Apparently the doctors demonstration did not have anything to do with the dissolution of the government - just a coincidence I guess but indication of troubled times.  Interesting times here in Vienna!
