Bellows Beach is located between Kaneohe and Makapu'u. There's a civilian and military side. The military side is a lot cleaner and less crowded. It's a great place for families to come and have a good time. The water is good for swimming, the waves are small, and there are lots of facilities close by.
The Fermins have always been great to me and they are amongst a couple of families that I consider extended family in Hawaii. The Fermin men started coming to Bellows years ago on camping trips to relax, fish, and drink. They have recently started inviting the rest of the family members on these trips. The women were initially hesitant about the invitation thinking that the men had hidden ulterior motives
There are several of these Bellows camping trips throughout the year now and "camping" isn't really what I would call what they do. There are tons of amenities; the most impressive is the kitchen setup and a covered dining area complete with enough benches to sit a small village. The men have made these camping trips their personal cooking extravaganzas. They even have themed meals throughout the stay, like all Hawaiian cuisine, or all Seafood.
Through the course of my visit I had hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled lamb, beef kebobs, shrimp scampi, fried perch, ahi poke, smoked ham, kari kari, fruit salad, teriyaki chicken, and steamed fish (I think it was halibut). I'm not even listing sides and desserts. AMAZING! The best food I have eaten so far on this trip has flat out been at the Fermin family camp trip.
At the end of the day, I looked like I was pregnant with twins.
After having my fill and saying my goodbyes to the Fermin clan, Steven and I took the long way back to town rounding Makapu'u Point
Notes from Saturday night: Dancing with your friend's little sister can be really awkward, Monkey Bar is the place to be right now in Hawaii, my liver is a rockstar, and Korean food is the bomb after a long night out.
The best thing to do in Hawaii on Sunday is to go to the Swap Meet at Aloha Stadium. It is just a shadow of the bazaar that it was years ago, but it's still a great place to pick up some cool souvenirs and Hawaiian themed goods. While Damo walked off his hangover, I browsed the merchant lined aisles for anything interesting. Nothing special caught my eye on this day, but I did get a good head massage and I almost bought a giant foam gecko that you can make move like the real thing.
The rest of the day was spent cruising around old hangouts. I visited my old neighborhood, AMR, and glanced through comics at Jelly's.
I had dinner with the Jay and the Ablans. They too are like extended family to me. Before he became DJ Compose, Jay was one of the closest friends I had my senior year in high school. I'm glad to know that deep down he's still that kid who is there for those close to him and wants nothing more than to have fun.
The weekend was brought to a close over some drinks and playful banter with Damo and his lovely friend Gypsy while that funny love song by T-Pain played in the background..."she poppin, she rollin, she rollin, she climbin that..."
