I have officially returned to the Hawaiian Islands. Every time I get back here, a little part of me always wonders why I ever leave. The weather is perfect. It's always a consistent 75-95 degrees Fahrenheit, mostly sunny, slightly humid, and there are always cool ocean breezes to keep the heat down. The landscape varies from gorgeous to breathtaking. The people are diverse, chill, and easy-going. The food here is simply delicious. Lastly, it's surrounded by clear, blue ocean water. If it were not for my uncontrollable wanderlust, I would probably stay here. Perhaps when it is all said and done, this will be where I spend my retirement.

I'm in Maui waiting for a connecting flight to Oahu and I am exhausted, thanks to an awesome day/night with some friends from Temecula. I spent my first official day on vacation roaming San Diego with Chris, Crysel, Raul, and Rachel. It was Raul's birthday yesterday so we thought it would be fun to go to San Diego.

Chris, his girlfriend Crysel, brother Patrick (who is recovering from surgery and unfortunately could not hang out with us...get well soon bro!) and Raul, are the core of a group of great friends I made in Temecula. Hanging out with them was a great way to start my summer travels.

So the plan was to go to San Diego, get some food, and have a good time. Our first stop was Mira Mesa to pick up Rachel, a friend of Raul's, on the way from Temecula. She use to live in SD, but currently resides in Seattle. She is in town for the week and decided to join us.

Mira Mesa is often referred to as Manila Mesa because there happens to be a thriving Filipino community there. 01 New Camera

Since we were in Manila Mesa and had not eaten anything all day, we grabbed a bite at the most obvious place for any hungry Filipino on the go...we had us some Jollibee! I recommend the spicy fried chicken and spaghetti combo.

Our next stop was good ole Jepoy's bakery in Ocean Beach for some dessert. He has some of the best brownies you will ever taste. The buzz going around about these things is incredible. Stopping at Jepoy's was definitely a highpoint of the day.

From OB, we made our way to The Lamp and Dick's Last Resort. The draw of this place is the entertainingly rude and sarcastic servers that wait on you. The food is pretty good for what it is. Things that stood out include the BBQ chicken wings, the Crabbie Balls, and the Pork Bonerz. It being his birthday, Raul was thoroughly embarrassed by our server and had to wear a ridiculous hand-made party hat that said something about him abusing Viagra.
After Dick's, we walked off some of the calories by doing some window shopping. All the while, Chris struggled to keep Crysel from draining his wallet, we got our coffee drinks jacked by a bunch of German tourists at some café, and I ran into a parking meter. Those damn meters are solid! My shoulder is still sore.

For some reason, we were still hungry. So we decided to stop at the Yardhouse for some drinks and appetizers. It's a great place to get a beer; they have an incredibly extensive beer list. While sitting in our booth at the Yardhouse, I realized that Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" is a ridiculously long song or maybe I was having some serious time perception problems.

From the Yardhouse, we decided to hit up this placed called the Lei Lounge in University Heights. The place was dead, but it was very nice and chic. One could imagine it popping off on the weekends. The front room contains the bar which leads into a back outdoor patio area complete with private party cabanas and fire pits. Large panel video screens hang overhead on one side of the patio area. As nice as it was, we didn't stay more than five minutes in the place because the kitchen had closed and, believe it or not, we were still hungry.

We ended out the evening in my old stomping grounds, Golden Hill, pigging out on slices of pizza at Luigi's Pizzeria. It's some of the best New York style pizza in town.

By the time it was all said and done, we made San Diego our personal buffet. I don't think I've eaten at so many different places in such a short span.

Hopefully I'll be able to work some exercise into my schedule while I'm traveling so that I can knock out some of these newly acquired calories.

Special thanks to Kuya Edil, Ate Racquel, Nikka, Ria, and Edilyn for putting up with me for the past few months.

I'm off to Honolulu...
